INTERVIEW WITH GABRIELE SALVATORES

By Andreas Wiseman

Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores tells Andreas Wiseman about mixing fantasy and reality in his latest film, Happy Family.

After picking up the foreign language Oscar in 1992 for Mediterraneo, Gabriele Salvatores has carved out a diverse directorial career with his work including such acclaimed films as I’m Not Scared, the romance Teeth and Nirvana, an action sci-fi film.
Salvatores’ latest, Happy Family, is a Milan-set comedy in which a neurotic writer, Enzo, struggles to finish a screenplay about two dysfunctional families. As Enzo becomes increasingly attached to his eccentric characters they assume central roles in the film’s plot. Produced by Colorado Film and RAI Cinema the film stars Fabio De Luigi, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Margherita Buy and Salvatores regular Diego Abatantuono. Sold internationally by RAI Trade, the film was released in Italy at the end of March by 01 Distribution.

Love affair in Venice

How much time does it take to realise that a stranger we meet by chance is “the right person”, the love of our life? For Silvestro and Camilla, it probably only takes a glance, the look they steal at each other on the vaporetto, in Venice, in the winter of 1999. She, a shy student of Russian culture (Isabella Ragonese, again brilliant as a university student after Her Whole Life Ahead) seeks solitude and concentration on a secluded island on the Lagoon. Lively and self-assured, he (Michele Riondino) makes the first move. But, a little out of fear and pride, they lose touch with each other.

ITALIAN CINEMA LONDON ON EMPIRE ONLINE

By David Parkinson

Too few Italian features secure a general release in this country, so it's good to see Italian Cinema London arrive at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. Despite its slightly truncated form, the event's quality is laudably high, with new titles by such front-rank names as Stefania Sandrelli (Christine), as well as intriguing offerings from such newcomers as Susanna Nicchiarelli (Cosmonauta), Alessandro Angelini (Raise Your Head), Marco Chiarini (The Thin Match-Man) and Donatella Maiorca (Purple Sea).

Christine

After growing up at the court of Charles V in France, where her father was court astrologer and physician, the Italian Cristina da Pizzano, also known as Christine de Pisan, is left completely destitute during the struggle between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. Forced to survive by her wits amidst the dregs of society, Cristina discovers she has a talent for poetry thanks to Charleton, a minstrel who tours the taverns, and Gerson, a theologist. Stefania Sandrelli makes her directing debut with a true story about the gentle sex (but she wrote the script with Giacomo Scarpelli and Marco Tiberi, under Furio Scarpelli's supervision). She wanted to capture " the Middle Ages according to women, with their colours, their lullabies, their human warmth. [read more]
